Tom Weir was born at the right time. When he instinctively decided to abandon Glasgow for long, arduous walks across the Scottish Highlands, the world was yet to cotton on to the potential attraction of his fine wee country and as such, he would regularly find himself alone in the wilderness.

Tom's much loved series, the iconic 'Weir's Way', has inspired two very different Scottish musical acts to unite in his name, with a shared adoration of both his character and the landscape which surrounds us.

For one night only, analogue synthesizer collective 7VWWVW (pronounced ‘Mammal’) and voice artist Wounded Knee showcase an entirely original score, specially composed and performed live, to outstanding moments of 'Weir’s Way'.

Set in the unique location of Whitehill School’s all seated, atmospheric auditorium space, this promises to be one of spring’s most exciting and special events.

Something of a treat and a double bill we can heartily recommend to you - Dutch masters Persil are making a rare and welcome visit to the UK and take in the outer reaches of the Kingdom of Fife
, at the Greenside in Leslie, near Glenrothes. We’re fans of David and Martine’s infectious electro pop, having promoted them more than once, indeed staging them at Tigerfest and GoNorth. And we make no apologies for our unbridled favouritism in making this an itm? recommended show, as we’re in good company - the band received the endorsement of no less than John Peel, recording two sessions for his show.

Sharing the bill with them, another favourite and another band we’d call friends, if they’d let us.
Cruiser have seen many lineup changes through the years and their musical style has moved from kitchen-sink “21st Century Caledonian Pop” to something more minimal and electronic. The now four-piece have over the years, gone from being faves of Steve Lamacq to the more current Colin Murray, if we’re collecting Radio One DJ kudos.

All this plus the chance to check out one of the most interesting venues in Scotland, one which despite its fairly off-the-beaten-track location consistently gets in interesting and high profile lineups. Hopefully we’ll see you there, if you see us buy us a drink…

Mammals are everywhere. You’re one, I’m one and they’re a group of them; only upside-down and back-to-front.

Lost yet? Let me fill you in.

265 million years ago mammals made their earth debut, and about 264,999,999 years later four men from Edinburgh decided to form a band and name it after the most dominant species on earth.

Simple enough, only not. Other wise bandits had chosen the name before them, and being rather fond of it they decided to keep it, albeit in a rather cryptic fashion.

Thus 7VWWVW was born.

Sounding like a quirky Boards of Canada, 7VWWVW make music "using synthesisers from the misty past".

“We're not really into computers and that funny stuff," says one of the mammals, Nick Munro. "We prefer to play the instruments and compose as a band and that's probably what gives us our unique sound.

“We have the sloppiness of humans playing keyboards rather than the robotic accuracy of music created and cut and pasted on a 'puter.”

7VWWVW is a real, living arts collective. They work with visual artists to create backdrops to their gigs, they run a vinyl record label called Crystal Wish, on which they put out records by their ‘talented pals’, and they like to produce soundtracks to films and animations.

Going into hibernation over the winter, they plan to start work on their second LP. “We record to tape, as live as possible," says Munro, "and we value the fact that our recorded music can be accurately reproduced live. We don't overdub and layer up like crazy, nuh uh son. It’s craft!”

7VWWVW don’t play live that often. You’ll have to be a predator and keep a watch on their MySpace if you want to catch them, and if you red-blooded mammals can’t wait that long, take a bite of their first recorded album for free here.

Despite having existed for around eight years, Dunfermline act Cruiser have only recently released their second album, Happyrobots: smilingpeople. Making up for lost time, their third has followed swiftly, though it’s technically an ‘upgrade’ - 16 remixes of the band’s critically-acclaimed move into electronic pop.
Here, they have decided to hand over the controls to some trusted collaborators, such as Edinburgh labelmates The Magnificents, who show a surprisingly restrained touch on ‘It’s All Good Baby’, giving it a sheen Daft Punk would be proud of. Long-time pal and Fisher-Price guru ‘Kid Carpet’ casts his spell over the introductory track Input while Japan’s Tiger Tiger - a collaborator on the original album - opens up ‘A Key That Hurts’ to some Air-y wooziness.
But it’s Tiger Tiger’s ‘A Gentle Press’ - a Record of the Week on Radio One - that takes pride of place. With no less than three takes on the spacepop hit of 2008, DJ Luke Solomon’s bubbling dance remix lifts the honours. In all, a decent introduction to the band, though seeking out the ‘originals’ - and come to that, their now decidedly retro debut Northern Electric - to get the full story.

Despite a touring schedule which might fairly be described as minimal, Fife’s long-serving Cruiser are still criminally under-rated. So anything that gets the gospel out there – particularly a well-realised remix version of their last album Happy Robots:smilingpeople – is a good thing.

HR:ptly is a good to gorgeous record in its own right, although many of its contributors (Laugh & Peace, Tiger Tiger, pndc) might be unfamiliar names. Perhaps the most recognisable are Kid Carpet, who provides a suitably DIY electro version of ‘Input’, and Luke Solomon, with one of three versions of ‘A Gentle Press’. Edinburgh’s The Magnificents also make a welcome return with a suitably Krautrockin’ take on ‘It’s All Good Baby’.
